Originally the home of the Mi’kmaq and called Mushamush, the place now known as Mahone Bay has been attracting people since the 1600’s. Quickly realizing that the land was poorly suited for farming, the townspeople turned to the sea prosperity. In 1754, a sailor Captain Ephraim Cook, settled in the town and started a company building ships. By the 1900’s everyone in the town and surrounding areas were supported by the ship-building industry. This remained a primary business in the town, until the mid 1970’s, producing over 1000 ships in 220 years of building.
Now this beautiful town is a prime tourist destination for its unique feel and beautiful views.
