Arichat is one of the oldest communities in Nova Scotia dating back to the 1700’s. Located on Isle Madame, the land settled as Arichat forms a protected harbour, in 1752 the population totaled 125 people of Acadian, English and Irish decent and Arichat was quickly becoming an important trading port. As the trades industry rose so did the population of Arichat, by the 1830’s it surpassed 2000 and continued to rise until around the time of Confederation. Today the community has been drastically effected by the collapse of fisheries industry but the residents are working to bring renewed faith to the community’s future.
